What One Should Know About IVF Intro Vitro Fertilization

By Carolyn Fisher

In vitro fertilization is a complex number of procedures that are used to treat fertility as well as genetic problems. The main reason why it is done is so as to aid in conception. For the procedure, there will be collection of eggs from ovaries of a woman which are supposed to be fertilized by sperms, which happens in a lab. There will then be implantation of the resulting embryo on the walls of the uterus. A single cycle of IVF Intro Vitro Fertilization goes for two weeks.

It is the most effective type of assisted reproductive technology that is available. It is a procedure that can be done using eggs of a woman and sperms of their partner. It could also involve eggs and sperms that that are from donors. There are instances where a gestational carrier is used. The carrier is a woman who will have the embryo implanted in their uterus.

The chances of one having a baby successfully using the procedure will depend on a number of factors. These include the age of the person and causes of the infertility. Further, it is a time-consuming process and which is also very costly. It should also be noted that it is invasive. In the event that more than one embryo is implanted within the uterus, IVF could result in pregnancy with more than one fetus, what is commonly referred to as multiple pregnancy.

There are a number of risks that one should expect when considering the procedure. The first is the risk of multiple pregnancies. This is what happens when there is implantation of more than one embryo. With such pregnancies, there will be a higher risk of early labor and also low birth weight then when the pregnancy was with a single fetus. Also, the probability of miscarriage in women that conceive through this procedure will increase. This is especially so for older women.

When a baby is conceived through IVF, they will have increased chances of having birth defects. The age of mothers is the single most factor that determines whether a baby is born with defects. People going for the procedure should also expect the emotional, physical and financial stress that it comes.

When one is choosing the best facility for the procedure, the success rate should be determined. This depends on the approaches used by the clinic and their treatment population. One will also need to confirm the costs that will be incurred. There are a number of screenings before one begins the cycle. One of the main ones is ovarian reserve testing which is done to determine quantity and quality of eggs. Semen analysis will also be done.

There are various steps involved for the actual procedure. These include ovulation induction, retrieval of the eggs, sperm retrieval, fertilization and then finally transfer of the embryo. Each cycle takes roughly two weeks and more than one cycle is required.

There are some instances when IVF procedure gets cancelled. There are several reasons for that. It could be because there are not enough follicles developing. It could also be that there is premature ovulation.
