How to Add a Link to My Website

By Carlton Fernigan

Keeping your website up to date is a crucial part of staying current and retaining visitors, while attracting new ones. The best way to do this is to continually provide new content to your users whether through writing or linking to other resources or peoples content. While this can feel overwhelming at first, the simple task of adding links to other peoples site can be quick and rewarding.

There are a number of different site tools but if you are using a simple website creator or a text editor, inserting a link is not difficult. You first need to obtain the link for which you will be linking to. You should start by opening a web browser and navigating to the specific page you want to link to. Once there, right click on the link and select copy. Now you are going to your page editor and opening the page you want to add the link to.

Read through the page and determine the best spot for the link. There are two ways to add a link. You can merely paste the link directly on to the page you are working on which will show up as a full website address when pasted. If you would like to link certain words like "Click Here" you will highlight them and link for a picture of a chain or infiniti sign. When you click on it, a window will popup for you to enter the link. Right click there and select Paste to paste in the link you copied.

If you don't have an easy text editor and you have to use HTML to add the link, that's fairly easy as well. You'll want to open the webpage and find the word you want to embed the link within. You'll need to add the following code around that specific word: (a href="http: // www.yourlink.com /") word (/a)

In the above code, 'word' stands for the word you want to embed the link within, and 'yourlink' is the actual link you want the word to go to when a visitor clicks on the link. Once you've added this to the HTML editor the website is present in, save it and then check the link to make sure it's working. If the link is not working, check it again and make sure all the brackets ( and ) are closed the way the link above shows, and that there are no additional spaces or breaks in the code.

There are many reasons to add links throughout a website, whether it's linking to sponsors, partners, or other websites that will provide more information for the visitor. Often, you'll need to use this method to link from one page to another within the website.

Links are an evolving process and as the internet grows, people's websites change. You need to make sure you are checking your links on a regular basis so that they are not dead or broken. Broken links result in people losing confidence in your site or your business.

While updating your site and adding links can seem like a menial task, these links are what holds the entire internet and search together. Often times search engines find your site or your business because they stumble on a link to your site from another page. It's always a good idea to link to resources you deem valuable and don't be afraid to ask for them in return.
