16GB iPad 3? 32GB iPad 3? 64GB iPad 3? Which Is Right For Me?

By Carter James Howton

As with all mobile computing devices these days, the new iPad 3 is available with one of three different hard drive sizes: 16GB, 32GB and 64GB. Naturally, as the storage space increases, so does the cost. How do you know how much hard drive space you will actually require? You don't want to spend $500 on a device that does not meet your needs; nor do you want to spend $700 on a device when you actually only needed the $500 version. What you have to ask yourself is how you will realistically utilize your device. I only use it to play some games, read some books and play around. I do not use it as a hardcore mini-computer. So the 16GB version will suit me just fine.

The 16GB iPad 3 is the least expensive iPad 3 and has the smallest amount of storage. Don't kid yourself, though. 16GB for the iPad 3 goes a long way. This is the iPad 3 I use. You can still load it up with apps. And you can still download and watch movies. You just can't store as much as you can with the larger versions. If you are like me and just use the iPad for funnin', the 16GB iPad 3 will surely suffice.

The 32GB iPad 3 features twice the size for only 20% more. Again, what are you really going to use this for? Are you going to create slideshows of your trip to Disney to share with your Facebook friends? Are you going to put Seasons 1-4 of Little Einsteins on there so you can entertain the kids (or yourself) while you drive to the inlaws? 32GB won't hold all of your precious memories and sanity, but it can hold a good bit. If you are looking to have fun and use it primarily as a multimedia device, the 32GB iPad 3 would be the one to get.

The 64GB iPad 3 starts at $699. This iPad 3 is for more serious users. If you consider your iPad as a tool and not a toy, and want to use it more as a laptop than a playback device, you should opt for the much larger 64GB. The price is nearly double that of the 16GB, but you are getting much more for your money.

Choosing which iPad 3 is right for your needs is not difficult. You merely have to realistically determine how you will be using the device. It is always better to err on the side of a larger hard drive. However, most of the time the larger device is not really required. Best of luck and enjoy your new iPad 3, whichever model you choose.
