Good Option - Discount Netbook Review

By Luke Carter

I really like Toshiba's customer service. This netbook is great.

Of course, updating to Word 2010 will cost upwards of $100 - and I don't even need/want Excel, Outlook, etc. I plan on updating from Word and Excel starter if you're going to use those programs at all, or find another source like Open Office. The best browser to use is Google chrome I have figured out. I never experience lag, can run several applications at once.

The display is crisp and clear, the webcam works as well as my Logitech 9000, it never seems to get even warm much less hot while my laptops both sit on cooling pads and feel hot to the touch. The keyboard is the best, firm and solid - no sticking keys and amazingly they all work!

It cannot play back 720 or higher video. And, its playback of 480 is probably only ok by most people's standards. My only reason for a non 5 star review is that I had to buy a USB wireless card because Ubuntu would not find and install my built in Realtek 8188 wireless card. I did find out that when I bought it, it was one of the newest netbooks on the market.

I really like the second one so far. Boots fairly quickly, feels very solidly made, has a super display and an excellent keyboard and touchpad. The keyboard is easy to use and full sized, which I love. I've seen some complaints about the track pad but we have had no problems, maybe because we paired it with a wireless mouse. Please remember it's not a laptop, so don't expect it to be one. It's a perfectly functional and useful tool, and does exactly what it is meant to do! I even provided a LINK to them to re-iterate the issue. They looked at the link with me while online, and then said, "Well we don't know about it."

I finally decided on a 10" notebook. After reading all the reviews and debating if I needed an air card.

I got rid of most of the Toshiba utilities and also Norton, and installed MS Security and my preferred freeware home edition utilities. I would have liked to have stereo speakers, but the netbook only includes a mono speaker under the unit. This is a great product, first of all. The keyboard is comfortable, the track pad is sensitive and easy to use, it is light, it feels good in the hands, and (easily the best feature in my eyes) the layout of the USB ports is amazing. That helped me to make the decision on this netbook. I did a month of research before making my decision. Another highlight of this particular netbook is the screen. It is magnificent for being as small as it is!
